My name is Lexie Haworth. I am an Australian Teddy bear artist trading under the name of The Bears of Haworth cottage and I have been a full time professional artist since 1994. I am mostly known for my large traditional aged bears even though I do make other styles.
My passion is to create bears that reflect the wonderful styles of the early antique bears made by Steiff and of course the many other manufacturers that produced bears since the first ones appeared in 1901. I have been particularly chasing the look and the illusive charm of those early Steiff bears throughout my bearmaking career and will be still trying until the day I can no longer manage to make them.
I also love to make vintage and antique inspired companions and stand alone pieces particularly using felt and other fabrics.
I have also designed a range of teddies and gollies for an Australian soft toy company that were mass produced in Thailand and marketed under the Bears of Haworth cottage name. They were sold extensively in the UK, New Zealand and Australia.
Another high point of my career as an artist was from 1998 through to 2008 I was given the honour of being commissioned by David Jones, Australia’s most prestigious department store chain to create five special editions. Four, to celebrate various milestone anniversaries for the company, and one to commemorate the beginning of the new century in the year 2000.
I have had so many wonderful experiences and met so many collectors and fellow Artists who have become very special and dear to me and looking back as I write this, it now amazes me how one day deciding to make a Teddy Bear, led me down a path that changed my life forever
